WORKSHOP BY
BRITISH COUNCIL ON USING PICTURES IN CLASSROOM:
A Workshop on
‘Using Pictures in classroom’ by British Council focused upon the creative use
of pictures in the everyday teaching and learning process. Using pictures really
appeals to visual learners who may suffer in a speaking and listening based
classroom. They also offer an opportunity for movement and a multi-dimensional
perspective which reach out to kinesthetic learners.Picture stories help
teachers and students enjoy more dynamic classes while limiting teacher
preparation.
MATHS WORKSHOP
FOR PRIMARY:
A Maths Workshop was organized on 19th November, 2011
at Navy Children School, Chanakya Puri. The resource person, Ms. Ashalata Badami,
author of ‘Enjoying Mathematics’ by Oxford University Press, emphasized that
children be made to experience Maths rather than just be made to learn the
facts.
She introduced the sequence of steps for concept building, which included
E - Experiencing the concept with real objects
L - Language used to describe these objects
P - Picture shown related to the concept
S - Symbols associated with that concept
E.L.P.S follows the “concrete to abstract” method.
The topics covered under this sphere were introduction of multiplications and multiplication tables. Various activities and games were also included in the workshop which covered topics such as- Fractions (additions, subtraction, multiplication and division), Decimal (additions, subtraction, multiplication and division), and Geometry and place values.
PROFICIENCY TEST: The following students appeared in Proficiency Test conducted by CBSE and have successfully cleared it with merit.

MAHA KAALRATRI:
Celebrated Annual Day with great fervour on 18th December 2011 at the
Talkatora Indoor Stadium. His Holiness Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaj (General
Body Commissioner - Iskcon, Global Head Chairman & Trustee of BBT) graced the
occasion as Chief Guest. PadmaBhushan Uma Sharma, the renowned Kathak dancer
was the Guest of Honour .The highlight of the evening was the play ‘Maha
Kaalratri’. Mata Kaalratri is worshipped on saptami of Navratri. In this form
Maa Durga removes all the evil powers and is believed to be the destroyer of all
demon entities. Kaalratri means “The death of Kaal”. The Chief Guest and the
Guest of Honour lauded the synergistic efforts of the participants and were
overwhelmed by the performance.
EXPLORING INTERNATIONAL DIMENSIONS…: Mrs.Vijay Laxmi Singh ,Principal , along with Ms.Pooja Datta (Primary Teacher) visited the St. Matthew’s Primary School in Leeds, UK from 5th -13th October as part of the teacher exchange programme under the DFID Project. Lessons based on cookery, dance and religion were conducted wherein the children there got an opportunity to learn more about the Indian culture. The school Principal, Mrs. Vijay Laxmi Singh said that the world has become a small community now and such visits are a great source of inspiration to learn about various global issues. Through exchange programs, educators gain opportunities to share the strengths and best practices of each other’s education systems, and provide their partner’s students with unique cultural perspectives. Exchange teachers gain knowledge of each other’s country, people, culture, and language, and acquire the global awareness and skills which are really important for living and working successfully in the 21st Century.
HERITAGE EDUCATION PROGRAMME: As per the CBSE guidelines a Heritage Education Programme - to promote heritage education has been taken up. Various activities under this have been conducted.
-Formation of Heritage Club called “Dharohar” with 50 members from Classes 6 - 10. They were issued a heritage passport teach & made to take a pledge in the assembly on 24th November 2011.
-Heritage Awareness Week was celebrated from 7th November – 14th November 2011 through Poster making competition.
-World Heritage Week was celebrated from 19th – 25th November 2011 by conducting a Special Assembly & a Heritage Quiz.
-A Heritage Walk was conducted at Jantar Mantar for the teachers and students on 26th November 2011.
MOCK DRILL: As part of the Earth Quake Preparedness Exercise a Mega mock drill on ‘Drop Cover Hold’ was conducted on 8th December 2011 to create awareness among the students, teachers & other staff of the school.
Under this exercise the In-charges of the Disaster Management Team Ms. Pratima Chawla and Ms. Vibha Lamba attended the workshop conducted by Disaster Management Authority on 3rd December 2011. The team conducted a demo on ‘Drop Cover Hold’ in the morning assembly on 5th & 7th December 2011 respectively and taught the students valuable safety lessons learnt in the workshop. Pamphlets on Earth quake preparedness and Fire Safety were distributed to all the staff and students of the school.
INTEGRITY CLUB: An integrity club has been initiated as a community organisation for the purpose of cultivating human values among students having as its vision - “Values in the society will be rekindled by Young Champions of Ethics”.
Due to the omnipresent influence of the electronic media, and living in a society predominantly organised as per the nuclear family system, children are more exposed to negative values. The club consists of students from classes VI to IX. Twelve basic human values termed IC values, have been recognised and decided upon to be inculcated for strengthening the character and personality of Young Champions of Ethics through activities and practice.
The IC values recognised are Integrity, Patriotism, Tolerance, Secularism, Simplicity, Honesty, Love, Compassion, Responsibility, Respect, Non-violence, and Unity.
These values will be inculcated through activities like narration of stories, poems, anecdotes, quotes, slogans, collage, quiz, poster making, etc.
SPIC MACAY: Under the aegis of Spic Macay, as part of Virasat 2011 a lecture cum demonstration was conducted on Kathak Dance Form by eminent Kathak Dance exponent, Smt. Prerana Shrimali who is an outstanding performer, brilliant choreographer and one of the few dancers who excel in projecting the traditional aspects of Kathak Dance.
INAUGURATION OF HERBAL GARDEN: Renowned NGO, DEEKHSHA, in association with the Department of Environment, Government of NCT, Delhi and ECO CLUB of the SCHOOL inaugurated Herbal Garden on 8.9.11. Deeksha provided us with different varieties of herbal plants which were planted. by the students. Each plant was labeled with a placard stating its medicinal values. Founder-director, Ms. Tripat Parmar enlightened us with the benefits of herbal plants.
A TRIP OF LIFETIME: The Salwan Family had a day out at the Kingdom of Dreams on 3rd September 2011. The staff members along with the Head visited the place. It was an ultimate entertainment and leisure destination. The place offered the best of India in the form of Cuisine, Crafts, Musicals, Dramas, Carnivals, Street Dances, Mythological Shows and much more. Every state pavilion had a distinct style and character which were delightful to observe. The teachers also visited the Nautanki Mahal and watched the extravagant cinematic and theatrical musical show Zangoora and defined it as a spectacular world of unparalleled imagination!
GRAND BANYAN PROJECT: The school was a proud participant of the British Council’s GRAND BANYAN PROJECT for promoting environmental awareness and producing sustainable action. Ms. Shweta and Ms. Reji were in charge of the MILLION NOTEBOOKS CHALLENGE activity under it. Waste papers, newspapers and old books were collected over a period of two months from students of all the classes on a weekly basis. The school collected 870kg of waste paper at the end of the collection period, which was finally handed over for the purpose of manufacturing books for underprivileged children (from the pulp obtained on recycling waste paper.).
PUPPET DANCE COMPETITION: The competition was held on 31st September 2011 in the school ground. A group of twelve students from the KG Class participated in the Annual Dance Competition organized by Salwan Public School. An extraordinary theme of the battle between good and evil that rages within the individual conscience itself was taken up. It was beautifully depicted through colorful costumes, props including innovative human masks and our wonderful dancing tiny-tots.
WORKSHOP ON “ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND ENERGY CONSERVATION”: A workshop organized by Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Management Centre (Department of Environment) at Delhi Secretariat on 14th December 2011. It was attended by Ms. Ashima Kumar, Ms. Divya Kumar along with Saurabh Gupta of Class VIII. The aim of this workshop was to create awareness about the effects of global warming and ways we can reduce the same. A quiz was conducted on Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation by TERI in which Saurabh Gupta of Class VIII got the First Prize among 35 schools from all over Delhi.
HENKEL ECO- PETITION:
Xth Class students of our school participated
in an online contest named ‘Henkel eco- petition’. It’s a matter of great
delight to report that Jasdeep Singh of Class X secured the
first place in the above said online competition.
PARTICIPATION IN THE SPEECH COMPETITION: Jayant Nahata of class XI-A participated in the Speech Competition held at Gandhi Peace Foundation, Vishnu Dighambar Marg, New Delhi. He secured the second position amongst the 61 speakers who spoke on the topic “Can Lokpal Get India Rid of Corruption”. He was awarded a cash prize of Rs.300 and a certificate.
Sports Activities
FOOTBALL (CULTURAL ACTIVITIES): 40 students participated in the Opening Ceremony & Closing Ceremony of Durand Football Cup held from 5th to 15th October at Ambedaker Stadium.
SKATING: Participated in the Speed Skating (1500 mtr) Competition held at, Bharati Technical Educational Sports Welfare Society on 28th September 2011.
JUDO: 4 Students participated in the CBSE North Zone Judo Championship, held at Shiv Vani Public School, Mahavir Enclave from 23rd - 25th September, 2011.
CRICKET: Our School won the Inaugural Match against Salwan Public School and NDMC boys in the Finals & our school were runner up in Inter School Boys Championship League.
Vipul Manchanda was awarded the Best Bowler of the Tournament.
ATHLETICS: 3 Students of our school participated in the School State Championship.
In CBSE athletic meet 2011-12 held from 21st to 23rd November at Salwan Public School Delhi Samridhi Kakkar of Class-VIII got a bronze medal in 100mtr. race.
CHESS: In CBSE (North Zone-I) Chess Championship 2011-12 held from 10th to 12th October at Mount Abu Public School, Rohini, and girls secured 6th position.
