Dustbin Race: To inculcate the habit of using the dustbin and keeping the surroundings clean, the nursery classes conducted a ‘Dustbin race’, an outdoor activity which the children enjoyed a lot, picking up paper and putting it in the dustbin followed by a recitation .
 

Red Colour Day:  For the recognition of the Primary Colour Red – ‘Red Colour Day ‘was celebrated. The nursery children  were involved in a’ Red Colour Day’ activity which involved recognizing red objects/colour in the environment followed by different art and craft activities related to the theme.
 

Inter-House Regional Dance Competition:  Inter-House Regional Dance Competition was held on 30 April with great enthusiasm. Out of the various regional dances of India the houses mainly focused on Dandiya, Kalbeliya, Bhangra and Maharashtrian dance. Each team had   6-8 students. The judges appreciated this initiative at the primary school level as this not only instilled a  spirit of unity in diversity but also helped  the students  to develop a taste towards classical dance.The houses were judged on various parameters viz. expression, props, co-ordination, etc. Avni house scored the first position followed by Ambar. Achal House and  Anal House secured third and fourth positions respectively.
 

Inter-Class Poem Recitation Competition: Inter-Class Poem Recitation Competition was held on 30 April 2012 on the theme of Environment. Classes I-V prepared for the competition with great enthusiasm. They also got sensitized towards the concern of environment. The various aspects of environment like recycling, reducing, conservation were the issues spoken about in the poems. The poems were judged on various parameters like diction, co-ordination, content etc. Class V-B bagged the first prize followed by III A and III B.


Earth Day:
Earth day was celebrated on the 30 April 2012 in the school grounds. All the classes participated in various programs organized by the school. The assembly for the earth day was marked by a special prayer to the Almighty, a pledge to conserve the resources of our mother Earth, a talk on the Serious issue of sustainable growth, and competitions at different levels.


Inter-House Skit Competition:
The senior school conducted an inter-house skit competition on the theme Think Green, Act Green. Each house presented a skit of 5-7 minute duration.

Nature Expedition at Navdanya:
Students of GD Salwan Public School, visited the NGO Navdanya situated in a village area in Dehradun on 20 April 2012, which was a great experience indeed... The main purpose of the visit was celebration of Earth Day on 22 April, 2012 and making a declaration on Rights of Mother Earth regarding Living Culture, Living Economy and Living Democracy. 


The NGO is built on approximately 25 acres of land and a major portion of this land has been used for farming, particularly mixed cropping. The people working there informed the students about various species of medicinal plants present there and the various methods employed for the cultivation of various kinds of crops.  


Children were fascinated to know that such a large area was irrigated by just a single well of 90-100 feet. They saw how judiciously the villagers made the use of resources available to them. The students also attended a workshop on ‘Living Democracy’ in which they discussed about some rights and ways through which animals, plants and human beings can live democratically on this earth by respecting each other’s existence. The celebrations of Earth Day continued and students shared their experiences of various workshops on puppetry, theatre, creative writing etc. last but not the least, presentation was given  on ‘Biodiversity and Health’. Dr. Vandana Shiva was the Chief Guest of the evening who is also a member of Rio +20 summit to be held in the month of June. It was overall a great learning experience.

 

     Exhibition on project SEARCH by TERI: The students participated in an exhibition on project SEARCH by TERI on 20 April 2012 at   Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Center. Bakshish Singh of class IX was awarded the Second Prize for creating artwork made from recyclables on the theme “Environment Protection". The competition was organized by Teri and Tetra Pak India Pvt. Ltd. as part of project SEARCH.
 

CSE WORKSHOP: GSP: How green is my school? GSP : Green School Teachers training programme was conducted by the Centre of Science and Environment on 15 and 16 May 2012 at Tughlakabad Institutional Area, New Delhi. Over the course of two days, the resource persons Mr. Ashish Shah, Ms. Ajanta Sikdar and Ms. Sumita Das discussed how environment education can be made more interesting and practical inside the school. They specified the need to change the way we manage our natural resources, alter our consumption patterns and innovate with current technologies so that we can improve the environment around us.
 

Visit to TERI: An extremely productive and exciting visit TERI- ‘The Energy and Research Institute’ was organized on 24 April 2012 and 25 April 2012 for the students of class X. Firstly, a movie on RETREAT complex was shown which made children aware that the future energy scenario of most countries in the world rests on a major shift to renewable sources of energy. The movie was followed by a  visit to the various  sections of the institute like Biomass gasifier, Tissue culture laboratory, AC underground tunnel, Vermicomposting and RETREAT complex to name a few. The students were amazed to see the cleaning of water by the action of plants called phragmites. Children realized that Sustainable development cannot be achieved only through government policies but requires coordinated action by all sections of society and all stakeholders. Also critical would be the need, for instance, to ensure design of buildings and structures in a manner that utilizes energy efficiently.
 

Inter-Class G.K.Quiz:  An inter Class G.K.Quiz was organized for Classes I-V on 15 May 2012. The quiz comprised of several rounds such as the rapid fire, audio-visual, buzzer and current affairs round. Students confidently answered the questions, amidst loud cheers from the audience. The students were encouraged and applauded by the co-ordinators for their efforts.


Inter-House Paper Reading Competition
: Inter-house paper reading competition was organized on 15 May where one student of each house was selected and prepared. The competition was judged on parameters like speed/fluency/pronunciation, voice modulation etc. Anal house won the competition.

Workshop on Quality Education Study: A school Leadership Seminar by Wipro and Educational Initiatives was held at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi on 5 May 2012. The event was organized to disseminate and discuss the findings of the Quality Education Study. The study was conducted to understand student performance, student attitude & values, learning environments and co-scholastic areas like art, sport and music in the school.


Report on Heritage Studies – A Future Pedagogical Base for all Subject Teachers: 
The ‘Train-the-Trainers’ programme on an ‘Innovative Teaching Approach of Social Sciences was taken up by GD  Salwan Public School under the aegis of SET on 17 May 2012.The overall objective of this workshop was  to provide a deeper understanding of and possibly an identification of the future pedagogical knowledge base of teachers, based on -the current state of the Heritage studies, a profound understanding of the future needs in knowledge and skills for the 21st century learner, worker and citizen, and an analysis of the institutional environments in which learning will take place (including technological resources) and the challenges facing teachers in these environments. Presentation on Management, Challenges and implementation of CCE in Social Science, conduct of the FA activities, maintenance of anecdotal records and managing the needs of special children and accreditation proved inspirational.


Dr. Naveena Jafa suggested the methodology of taking heritage as a central club, which will enkindle the imagination of the child and counsel him/her on various career options available by adopting a monument. She also highlighted the importance of parental involvement by suggesting to hold a activity oriented PTM at the monument. She wrapped up her address by posing a challenge before the teacher and the student as to how they visualize the future of the monument in the next 20 years.


Visit to Dargah of Hazrat Nizammudin:
The members of Heritage club went on  a Heritage walk along with Ms Navina Jafa and The Programme Coordinator Ms. Seema Goyal  to Dargah of Hazrat Nizammudin on 28 April 2012 which covered  Chaunsath-Khamba , Ghalib's Tomb , Jama'at- Khana Masjid, Tomb of Jahanara, Amir Khusrau's

Tomb, Baoli and various places within the central complex.

The Complex of the Dargah presents a dynamic flow of cultural traditions. The walk imparted an introduction on Sufism and created in us an understanding of the Sufi landscape that emanated from the energy of the city saint – Hazarat Nizamuddin that reached out to various Mughal nobility, kings, queens, medieval historians such as Barani. We also got the chance to interview Khawaja Hasan Nizami Sami the Chief Head of the Dargah. We were also told about the role of various functionaries associated with a Sufi Center and poignant anecdotes on the power of the Sufis of the Dargah as well as festivities and changing environment of the Nizamuddin Basti. 

 

Report on Promotional Drive by Intach on Delhi Being Declared a World Heritage City: A Promotional drive by INTACH was conducted   on 16 April 2012 during   the assembly to inculcate a sense of pride and ownership in the children. The resource person   explained the importance of why it was important for Delhi to be declared as a WORLD HERITAGE CITY by UNESCO.
 

Investiture Ceremony: G.D Salwan Public School recreated the excitement and drama of real elections in school through its Grand Investiture Ceremony held on 11 May 2012 and the elections that preceded it. It was an attempt to actively engage students with the political, social and moral issues that concern them by giving them the opportunity to stand as party candidates, speech writers and canvassers in a mock election. Students voiced their opinions by engaging in a fun and active citizenship exercise which provided an excellent introduction to the mechanics and issues involved in an election.  The deserving   candidates were nominated by all the teachers after conscious deliberation. Bhavya Popli & Gurbani Chabra were elected as the Headboy and the Headgirl respectively.
 

The school council was sworn- in by the Chief Guest Lt Colonel Mahesh Inder Singh Gill.  He encouraged the new council with words filled with warmth, hope and inspiration. The oath of office was administered by the Principal, Mrs. Vijay Laxmi Singh. The oath encapsulated the spirit of commitment and dedication that a student council member needs to imbibe in order to promote a smooth and positive functioning of the school The council pledged to carry out their duties with sincerity & give their best to the institution. The members of the student council were presented with their badges by the outgoing council of the last session. The former student council solemnly handed over the flags to the new student council members as a gesture of additional responsibilities. The former captains pinned the coloured badges for the new members. The other highlights of the programme were ‘the Journey of Democracy’ a small skit presented by students of Class X and an enthralling dance performance named ‘“ Dilli hain Dilwalon ki “.depicting the rich cultural heritage of Delhi . The programme ended with a vote of thanks by the Principal Mrs.Vijay Laxmi Singh.
 

Inter Class Essay Writing Competition: An inter class essay writing competition was held on 15 May 2012,. The theme was Heritage of professions and Landscapes Classes I-VIII were given the topic, ‘changing professions in India (last 100 years) and Classes IX-XI were given the topic: Changing Landscapes in India (last 100 years).The response of the students was overwhelming.
